Spring is here, so it’s a time of change, with new and interesting coding guidance for all. Helping healthcare providers to operate at their best for their patients through technology and service solutions in clinical documentation, coding, auditing and CDI. The medical sciences have gained momentum in this decade with the rise in demand for fast track research and improving the techniques in handling massive amounts of data libraries. While there are several factors that contribute to simplifying the medical data libraries, providing accurate results in segmented format for curation, identification and analysis remain one of the top priorities of the medical sector. With the integration of information technology, these priorities have gotten simplified with time by using clinical coding.

From the historical perspective, symbolic AI, as the mainstream approach from 1950 to the early 1980s, did not scale up to complex real-world scenarios, for example, to model the natural language that people use in their daily life17,18. In this paper, we reviewed the task of automated clinical coding from the perspectives of AI researchers and clinical coding professionals, what it is and why it is an important task, and summarised the challenges of the recent deep learning methods for the task. According to the Clinical Coders’ Society Of Australia, the Health Information Management Association of Australia’s Practice Quality and Safety Standards Committee created a Clinical Coding Practice Framework based on the Standards for Ethical Conduct in Clinical Coding. The Clinical Coders’ Society of Australia (CCSA) was also instrumental in the development of this framework. Clinical coding helps to efficiently manage the patient’s data compared to traditional data libraries utilising piles of documented papers. Every code carries crucial information, from a patient’s name to the final results of the diagnosis and this helps with monitoring changes and the creation of an action plan or forecast for possible medical emergencies in the future.

Each quarter the AHA examines outstanding coding issues, new procedures and technology and provides updates to previous coding guidance. Having an expert at your fingertips to help make sense of the guidance— putting it into real world examples— can help coding professionals to fully master current requirements and guidelines. Effective January 1, 2023, the AMA has revised the definitions and guidelines for hospital and other E/M services, including ED visits, nursing facility services, home services, and domiciliary care codes.

Also, coding for prolonged care services gets another overhaul with revised codes and guidelines. Webinar goal is to assist inpatient, outpatient and physician healthcare professionals understand the coding advice addressed in the 1st Q 2022 Coding Clinic.
